The moon was observed on 22nd Muharram Wednesday morning at sun rise. It was more than half moon before sunrise. The angular distance between the sun and the moon measured about 92 degrees. On Tuesday it measured 103 and on Monday 114 degrees. The rate of travel around 11 degrees per day indicates that this Muharram will have 30 days. The difference on Thursday morning will be 81 degrees.
The first crescent of Muharram was seen on the evening of Wednesday. Muharram began after completing 30 days for Zul hijjah. The last crescent will be seen on 29th Wednesday. Thus we count 29 phases in this month. It will have 30 Manazil. How many phases and Manazil could Drs. Salman and Khalid Shaukat see during Muharram. Muharram 1429 is 30 days from Wednesday to Thursday as appointed on the Day Allah SWT created the Heavens and the Earth. Drs. Salman and Khalid Shaukat who are astronomers and observers of the moon may comment on this. The Quraan reminds us:"Asshamsu wal qamaru bi husbaan".
The solar eclipse on Thursday 7-2-2008 marks the end of Muharram.
Muharram completes 30 days on Thursday and Safar begins on Friday (8-2-2008) irrespective of the Hilaal according to the Sunnah of the Prophet SAW.
It is pointless to give Angular Separation/Elongation of the Moon without giving your geographical location and the time it was observed. Angular Separation at Place A at Time AA will be different from Angular Separation at Place B at Time BB. Do not forget - Earth is in motion every second, it is not stationary. Moon is in motion every second, it is not stationary. Also - the speed at which Moon revolves around the Earth is not constant, it varies. When it is closest to the Earth, it moves fastly. when farther from the Earth, it moves slowly (all within one lunar cycle).
Also, it is wrong on your part to assume Angular Separation increases at a constant rate in a 24 hour period. It doesn't. Your 11 degree per day is at best a rough estimate (and not true for every month). Within a single lunar cycle - for every 24 hour period - the increase in Angular Separation will change and differ widely. So you cannot simply say today it is 100, tomorrow it will be 111 and the day after it will be 122 etc
For example, the following is the angular Separation from Makkah this month (few days):
3.614 degrees on Feb.7 at 14:43 Makkah Time 16.107 degrees on Feb.8 at 14:43 Makkah Time (movement of 12.5 from previous day - approx.) 28.994 degrees on Feb.9 at 14:43 Makkah Time (movement of 12.8 from previous day - approx.) 42.083 degrees on Feb.10 at 14:43 Makkah Time (movement of 13 from previous day - approx.)
